The police are here to harass you

Has anyone noticed how belligerent the police have become of late? (Yes, I know they have always acted that way, but it seems even more ubiquitous recently.)

Incredibly, four separate people I know have contacted me after being harassed by the police in just the last three months.  I am beginning to think there is a concerted effort by the cops to pick on everyone to demonstrate their power over us. Moreover, the harassment is non-discriminatory: one of the targets is a Jewish male; the second is a young Christian woman and the third one is a Hispanic teenager. The most recent harassee is a Yemenite pre-med student I know in Queens.

All of them were issued summonses for phony charges such as disorderly conduct, requiring them to take a day off from work to appear in the NYC Criminal Court where they will of course have their cases dismissed.

Only the Libertarian Party sees something wrong with the State’s agents bullying their citizens like this. Please join us in the fight against such tyranny.

The NYPD brags that they increased the number of “stop and frisk” accostings of NYers by fivefold between 2001 and 2006.

Does anybody have data on the increase in the number of disorderly conduct charges that the NYPD issued?

Has the NY Civil Liberties Union dug into this?
