New York’s War on Window Puppet Shows

According to this Diet Mountain Dew commercial, “window puppet shows are illegal in New York City”:

Caveat: I don’t know for a fact that window puppet shows really are illegal in New York City, but given the thousands of other insane laws in this city that I do know about, I wouldn’t bet against it. If any of our readers have the straight dope on puppet law, please share in the comments section.

  1. New York City Administrative Code Section 10-114:

§ 10-114 Street shows. a. It shall be unlawful to give any exhibition
of climbing or scaling on the front or exterior of any house or

    b. It shall likewise be unlawful for any person, from any window or
open space of any house, or building, to exhibit to the public upon the
street, or the sidewalk thereof, any performance of puppet or other
figures, ballet or other dancing, comedy, farce, show with moving
    figures, play or other entertainment.

    c. Violations. Any person who shall violate any provision of this
section, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not
more than twenty-five dollars, or imprisonment for thirty days, or both.

  2. Thanks, I knew some would be able to dig up the law quickly. Now if we only knew the rationale for this bizarre regulation. It seems like a blatant 1st Amendment violation to me, but that never stopped our Silly Council before.

  3. You should really check out Some of the laws still on the books in different states are unreal! In Oregon It is illegal to whisper “dirty” things in your lover’s ear during sex, and MANY more. Checkout all of the states!

  4. It’s a safety issue. Large crowds gathering to watch such a show could quickly jam up the sidewalk, requiring people to walk into the street to get around the mob.

  5. Good point. Those things all seem to break this “law.” I get it that could jam the sidewalks and make people walk in the street, so what do they do during TRL and shows like that that have the windows and crowds outside?

  6. Who comes up with this sh*t? NYC and its f**king laws are crazy. This is the most ludicrous crap I’ve ever heard. So you are saying if my 5-year old plays with his puppets in front of the window, I’m going to be fined $25 or go to jail for 30 days–or both?

Might as well move to China. It’s not that much different in the communist countries.

    This is silly.
