The First Freedom Fighters: Ancient Israel versus the Empire of David
Ukrainian East Village Restaurant, 140 Second Avenue in Manhattan
FREE

Jewish and Christian scripture treat King David as perhaps the greatest hero and most admired biblical figure after Moses.  However, biblical evidence shows that David and his son and successor, Solomon, were widely despised among the Israelites of that time. There were at least two major revolutions launched against David, another against Solomon, and a fourth following the death of Solomon. This last one, based on a clear libertarian ideology, resulted in the vast part of the Israelite nation breaking away from the Davidic dynasty. This successful revolution had its roots in a three-hundred year libertarian political continuum that one of the biblical authors criticized as a time when “Israel had no king. Every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”Biblical teachers and modern historians totally ignore dismiss or denounce the historical circumstances leading up to the anti-David revolution and the prehistory of this political movement. In this talk Gary Greenberg, relying on biblical and archaeological evidence, will explore what he calls the Hebrew Free State, history’s first wide-spread long-lasting political entity explicitly based on opposition to the state and endorsement of full individual freedom. It may have been the most libertarian major political enterprise that ever existed.  Its roots date back to sometime before 1220 BC and continued without significant interruption until about 1000 BC, at which time it was militarily defeated by David. The leaders remained in opposition to the Davidic monarchy and, some 80 years later, successfully launched the libertarian revolution (the first Tea Party) that freed most of Israel from the Davidic dynasty.

In this eye-opening and astonishing talk, he will lay out the historical contours of the Hebrew Free State, describe some of its deeply-held libertarian principles as well as some of its ups and downs and challenges, and introduce us to some of the libertarian heroes who guided it.

Gary Greenberg is a co-founder of the Libertarian Party of New York and served several terms as State Chairman. He is the author of the biblical classic “101 Myths of the Bible” and also the author of “King David Versus Israel: How a Hebrew Tyrant Hated by the Israelites Became a Biblical Hero.”
